Forced Migration Studies

About Us

Forced migration studies center for Afghanistan (FM-SCA) is a U.S.-based humanitarian organization founded in August of 2021 to respond to the needs of Afghan refugees internally displaced in Afghanistan and the diaspora of Afghan people in the United States and around the world. We are one of the many NGO

The FM-SCA is dedicated to providing humanitarian aid and practical services to the most vulnerable Afghans around the globe. We work towards a world where refugees around the globe are given the tools and means to develop their own futures and give back to their communities. Our services include but are not limited to: monitoring the Afghan refugee movement, empowering Afghan refugees in the United States through mental health of refugees and psychosocial support, child parenting help, raising voice against Afghanistan child labor and child abuse in Afghanistan, home-based educational services, Afghanistan refugee camp and acculturation assistance to allow Afghans to lead independent and successful lives whether they live near or far away from their homeland.

We work towards a world where refugees around the globe are given the tools and means to develop their own futures and give back to their communities. We do so by directly supporting projects that will empower them.

Our Story

Forced Migration Studies Center was founded by Dr. Wais Aria in late August 2021, just days after fleeing the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan. Dr. Aria grew up and completed his medical degree in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

In 2009, he founded the organization “Tabish,” which seeks to provide mental health and psychosocial support for women and children in Internally Displaced People (IDP) and refugee camps in Afghanistan. He has advocated for mental health and trauma-informed counseling worldwide, including time addressing the humanitarian work in Afghanistan. Dr. Aria was in Kabul to visit family when the Taliban captured the capital city on August 15, 2021.

Shortly after returning to the U.S., he founded FM-SCA to advocate for Afghans worldwide. He gathered donated goods for new Afghan arrivals in Virginia and assisted with translation needs.

Dr. Aria continues his work in trauma healing and mental health services free of charge for Afghan refugees in transitional centers and will continue this work as these refugees assimilate into society.
